“Extremely professional and efficient! Replaced my HVAC unit in a matter of hours, successfully mitigated a few surprises that came up, and did it all in the rain!”
A variable refrigerant flow (VRF) system is similar to a mini-split HVAC system. These systems have one or more outdoor units connected to one or more indoor units. An outdoor unit houses a condenser coil, compressor pump, and compressor fan. An indoor unit houses an evaporator coil, a blower, a condensate drain line, and a thermostat. These components allow the system to provide cooling during summer and heating during winter.
What differentiates VRF HVAC systems from mini-splits is their variable refrigerant flow. Mini-splits can serve multiple indoor units or heads from a single outdoor unit. That said, it delivers the same refrigerant pressure to all those heads. You may, for instance, have one zone set to 70 degrees Fahrenheit and another to 75 degrees Fahrenheit. The flow will be the same for both. With a VRF HVAC system, the flows vary as needed. That results in higher efficiency, lower energy consumption, and smaller electric bills.
The typical setup in a home will have approximately four zones, but you can have more than that. Most residential condenser units support up to eight heads out of the box. There are options for larger homes that need more zones. One option is to install two or more outdoor condenser units in a series to achieve the head limit you need for your home.
Many VRF systems have Wi-Fi capabilities that allow for remote access and control. As your VRF HVAC contractor, we can also install one or more smart thermostats in your home. You could, for example, have an upstairs thermostat and a downstairs thermostat to provide you with home-wide control.
Wall units are the most prevalent option for the indoor heads. Ceiling mounting is a popular alternative. That includes drop-down cassette units, which are ideal for open layouts. We also install floor units for living areas with limited wall and ceiling space.
